Abstract:
Despiteitspotentialimportanceintheglobalclimatesystem,mixingpropertiesoftheNorthPacificlow-latitudewesternboundarycurrentsystem(LLWBC)remainedunsampleduntilveryrecently.Wereporthereonthefirstmeasurementsofturbulencemicrostructureassociatedwiththesecurrents,madeinthewesternboundaryregionofthetropicalNorthPacificeastofthePhilippines.TheresultssuggestthatthermoclinemixingintheNorthPacificLLWBCisgenerallyweakwiththediapycnaldiffusivityκρ~O(10?6)m2s?1.Thisisconsistentwithpredictionsfrominternalwave-waveinteractiontheorythatmixingduetointernalwavebreakingissignificantlyreducedatlowlatitudes.Enhancedmixingisfoundtobeassociatedwithapermanentcycloniceddy,theMindanaoEddy,butmainlyatitssouthandnorthflanks.There,κρiselevatedbyanorderofmagnitudeduetoeddy-inducedgeostrophicshear.Mixingintheeddycoreisatthebackgroundlevelwithnoindicationofenhancement.
